Report and Registration - Amputee Walking School

The September 19, 2018 session of Amputee Walking School was completed with great success!

Co-hosted by Dankmeyer and the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UM Rehab), this program is more formally known as Advanced Gait Training for Individuals with Lower Extremity Amputations. The day long “school” features two segments and is led by Paralympians and self-styled “professional amputees” Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler.

The afternoon segment is a learning session for professionals, followed by an evening session where those with lower limb loss and their families (free to those participants!) come to work with Todd, Dennis and the pros on various kinds of exercises. Many of these attendees come to every session they can - to show their progress, see old friends, and get new exercises and encouragement - as well as cheer each other on.

HERE IS THE COOL NEWS!!!

Dankmeyer, Inc. is hosting the next event on the AWS calendar on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at the Dankmeyer Linthicum office, so put that one on your calendar. We would love to see you! On top of the professional and evening sessions, this is an opportunity to meet Dankmeyer staff members, get a little tour of the facility and meet 3DPO in person - that little green 3D intern has a selfie station all ready for you!

Amputee Walking School

Registration is now open for the next session of Amputee Walking School, Wednesday, September 19, 2018.

Adapted Sports Festival

In addition to AWS in September, the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute also hosts the Adapted Sports Festival on Saturday, September 15, 2018. "The event provides people with disabilities a phenomenal introduction to adapted sports and provides an obligation-free opportunity to try different activities, ranging from wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, adapted golf, hand cycling, adapted martial arts, wheelchair dance, scuba diving and much more." Race For Our Kids

And, as if there wasn't enough going on, join the Dankmeyer team and some of their colleagues from the Sinai Hospital campus, and other participants, for the Race For Our Kids - a 5K/10K/1 Mile Family Fun Walk on Sunday, September 16, 2018. This race will benefit the Children's Hospital at Sinai.

June Amputee Walking School Wrap Up

The summer session of Amputee Walking School was held on June 20, 2018. The afternoon segment was scheduled as a learning session for professionals, followed by an evening session where those with lower limb loss and their families come to work with the pros on various kinds of exercises.

Paralympians and self-styled “professional amputees” Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler were there to lead the sessions, as Dankmeyer co-hosts with the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UMROI).

Erika Brannock, who has previously attended AWS, was there to sign her new children’s book, The Journey of NEM. NEM is based on the true story of her experiences after the 2013 Boston Marathon, when she became an amputee. This motivational speaker and preschool teacher writes, “I wrote this book hoping to help children understand that when a hard thing happens to them, it’s not going to defeat them…”. Dankmeyer is very happy to support Erika in this new endeavor.

Special Guest Erika Brannock at June Amputee Walking School

We are pleased to announce that we will have a very special guest at the next session of Amputee Walking School, on June 20, 2018!

Erika Brannock will be there to sign her new children’s book, The Journey of NEM. NEM is based on the true story of her experiences after the 2013 Boston Marathon, when she became an amputee. This motivational speaker and preschool teacher writes, “I wrote this book hoping to help children understand that when a hard thing happens to them, it’s not going to defeat them…”. Erika cannot wait to share this beautifully illustrated tale, and the Dankmeyer team is very happy to be a part of her continuing journey.
