A few months ago, Kenneth Braitman contributed a story about his experiences as a bilateral amputee. You can read his complete story by scrolling a little further down our Patient Story page.
Kenny sums up his philosophy here:
The more I can move, maintain balance, and minimize harmful movements, the more I can appreciate life, expand my horizons, and maintain a good quality of life. These are the basic tenets which guide my own choices in how I live as a bilateral below knee amputee.
He would like to share a look at his daily morning routine, which might give other amputees some ideas for their own situations. He uses a wheelchair to get dressed in the morning before his legs are on. He has some cabinets in the bedroom where he organizes everything he needs for his residual limbs - at a wheelchair accessible level. He finds this much easier as an amputee than other things he has tried.
- Legs on the bottom
- Liners, socks, ointments, etc. above
This set of cabinets has all my primary clothes, t-shirts, underwear, stump socks, extra sleeves, spare liners, and all legs as well as desk for wheel chair. This has made my life so much easier. They are 4’ from my bed.
Thank you for sharing, Kenny! Practical tips are always appreciated.
