2020 Dates and the AWS 2020 Steps Challenge

Todd (L) and Dennis (R).

Is Team Maryland ready for the Amputee Walking School 2020 Steps Challenge? Amputee Walking School founders Todd and Dennis have just posted the information and want you to get involved! They talk about this activity as part of the Amputee Walking School program, and have set up a little state-to-state friendly competition to motivate people. You can check it out by clicking here!

We will look forward to having them back with us (and co-hosts University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute - UM Rehab) in Baltimore in just a few short months. Dates have been set for the four 2020 sessions of Amputee Walking School:

Notice that the June session will be on Saturday - this is to coincide with Peer Visitor training from the Amputee Coalition, at UM Rehab.

In the meantime, if you are not familiar with Amputee Walking School and the founders (Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler), we invite you to check out a great, really informative video, so click here. Todd and Dennis know how to engage and encourage amputees to get moving!

  • Saturday, June 27, 2020

  • Wednesday, September 16, 2020

In the meantime, if you are not familiar with Amputee Walking School and the founders (Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler), we invite you to check out this interview posted last year:

We had a chance to catch up with one of the founders of Amputee Walking School (AWS), Todd Schaffhauser, and ask him a few questions about how it all got started!

What inspired you to start the Amputee Walking School?

"The AWS program really happened by chance. We were asked to go to Austin, Texas to teach four amputees to learn to run in the fall of 1988. So we decided to host a running clinic. We [had] just got back from winning our gold medals in the Paralympics in Seoul, Korea. I was going to physical therapy school at the time and Dennis was actually working in real estate. After teaching our first students we realized that this was something we needed to do more of. More amputees who were diabetic and vascular started coming to the running clinics. We decided to change the program to include everyone who has an amputation. And the AWS program was born."

How did you and Dennis meet?

"We actually met in Nashville, Tennessee at our first competition and realized we both lived on Long Island. Then we started training together soon after. We have been working together for the last 31 years!!"

What advice would you want to give to new amputees?

"First is to be patient and take things one day at a time. I would [recommend they] meet other amputees that could become their mentor. [I] very much believe in mentoring. Amputees need to see what life will be like [in] three months, or six months down the road. Once they see that things are going to be okay if they work hard at it (and you [need to] work hard at it) the light at the end of the tunnel starts to shine brighter. You gotta keep moving forward!!"

What are ways to help even if you do not know someone with limb loss?

"Volunteering is a great way to help. We can always use spotters to help our amputees in learning the new training techniques. Anyone in the healthcare industry can be a great volunteer for the AWS program. Whether you are looking for support or training the Amputee Walking School is always in session."

Also have some fun watching Todd and Dennis in a Facebook Live video where they explain the program and demonstrate some exercises. They discuss the importance of physical therapy for amputees, and encourage amputees to track their steps, setting daily goals for themselves.

Amputee Walking School of November 20, 2019!

The last Amputee Walking School of 2019 was another success as our professionals completed their afternoon study of updated course material and an enjoyed energetic evening of exercise with our limb loss participants!

The program started at noon, when physical therapists, clinicians and other health care partners attended Dr. Jonathan Forsberg’s (MD, PhD) lecture on Osseo-integration. That was followed by Meg Sions (PT, PhD) and Outcome Measures in Limb Loss. The founders of Amputee Walking School, Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler, then took over the podium for an update on training techniques for limb loss rehabilitation.

Our evening program continues with those with lower limb loss and their families gathering around Todd and Dennis to hear them talk about their own lives and strategies to heal and regain mobility. Todd and Dennis stress the importance of exercise and persistence in order to reach individual goals. They specifically encourage amputees to walk - and join their 1 Million Steps Challenge. (Click here to read more about this friendly completion!) Then everyone breaks up to work with the physical therapists and other volunteers, under Todd and Dennis’ supervision, through various exercise stations.

Amputee Walking School is a program held four times a year, co-hosted by Dankmeyer and the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UM Rehab).   When our 2020 dates are confirmed, we will post them.

At the evening session, founders and amputees Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler start out by talking about the need for exercises and persistence in order to reach individual goals. Amputee Walking School September 18, 2019

Once again, Amputee Walking School did not disappoint! The Wednesday afternoon teaching session started with a fantastic presentation by Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler. They focused on in depth techniques to help our patients create a plan to become limb aware. This is work toward making patients feel like their prosthetic is a natural part of them - allowing them to reach maximum independence. The lively stories of personal experience and laughter created a welcoming environment where everyone felt like old friends.

Next came the event of the evening! The Walking School demonstrations and practice stations are free for those with lower limb loss and their families.

UM Rehab has a spacious and accommodating setup for the amputees to feel safe and right at home. They provided a water and a snack station for participants to enjoy refreshments between practice exercises. They had a generous amount of staff to assist each patient so no one was left out who wanted to practice their skills.  UM Rehab PT staff, clinicians from Dankmeyer as well as interns and trained patient volunteers were guided by instructions from Todd and Dennis.

Dankmeyer clinicians Mark Hopkins, Angie Bryl and Rochelle Dumm were there, as well as new Prosthetic Assistant Dawn Miranda and former intern Kamilla Miller. Dawn Miranda, a lower limb amputee herself, was attending her first Amputee Walking School and reports:

“The room was full of laughter as patients tested out the balance beams, walked the parallel bars and stood on balance stations. There were even two putting stations with a challenge from Mark Hopkins that Dennis would pay $5.00 for 5 whole in ones!! This made this a fun new challenge!!! As a close to the evening everyone circled around Todd and Dennis for some words of hope and encouragement to each person in the room to not give up!

To reach for the challenge and accept it and become their best! They encouraged everyone to ”Count your steps!” because without steps every day we can’t reach our goal where we feel one with our leg! Their words drew loud applause. Everyone reflected on what they learned and the new friendships made that night. I am sure I am not the only one who can’t wait until November 20, when the next event is scheduled.”

As soon as we have more specific info for the next session, we will make that available. It is November 20, 2019, so mark your calendars.
